Reverend John Henry Newman
(1801-1890) was a renowned writer, teacher, and cleric in the Catholic Church.

On liberalism in the church, Rev. Newman
Liberalism in religion is the doctrine that there is no positive truth in religion, but that one creed is as good as another…. It teaches that all religions are to be tolerated, for all are a matter of opinion. Revealed religion [biblical Christianity] is not a truth, but a sentiment and a taste, not an objective fact, not miraculous; and it is the right of each individual to make it say just what strikes his fancy.
No truer words were
ever spoken. Two of the mainline protestant Christian churches are the
Presbyterian and Methodist churches. The National hierarchies of these churches
have been extremely liberal and out of touch with their church members for many
years. The same is true of the National Council of Churches (NCC). Many members
have generally supported socialist and even communist causes – including
An article of Media Transparency, Institute on Religion and Democracy Slams 'Leftist' National Council of Churches, states:
New report from conservative foundation-funded IRD charges the NCC with being a political surrogate for MoveOn.org, People for the
American Wayand other liberal organizations. ...
"Bob Edgar has declared his personal support for same-sex marriage. He and other NCC leaders repeatedly criticize fellow Christians who defend the traditional definition of marriage. In thus fostering the impression of an evenly split U.S. Christian community, the NCC serves the interests of its 'progressive' yokefellows who are campaigning for the legitimization of same-sex marriage," ...
The homosexualists have exerted extreme pressure on the churches. From my reading, it appears that the two churches that have so far best withstood the homosexual pressure are the Southern Baptist and the Mormon (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) churches. The Catholic Church has had great difficulty from homosexual pedophile priests, but the last two Popes have tried to straighten these matters out, and have not caved in to the homosexualists.
The Methodist and Presbyterian churches have continually struggled with the homosexual contentions at their national conventions, and have so far stood by the teaching of the Bible that sodomy was a sin. But the activities in the individual churches have worked out differently. For example, in a Methodist church a lesbian woman became a minister, and even performed homosexual weddings, but the national administration and church court failed to remove her. The national leaderships of these churches have always tended to be leftist liberals – much more so than the average members.
The Anglican and Episcopal churches of the
Some "Christian" churches have in actuality forsaken all aspects of true Christianity. They do not teach that Christ was even the Son of God, much less the virgin birth. Some have even gone so far as to support homosexual marriage, and do not even recognize any sexual misbehavior as sinful. To a great extent this has been brought about by the complete acceptance of the false Darwinian evolution theories as fact.
The affirming United
Churches of Christ, and the Unitarian Universalist Churches, have declared
sodomy and homosexual marriage to be acceptable things, and are embracing sex
educations programs for their children, from kindergarten on up. Such programs
include the teaching that homosexual marriage and sodomy are not wrong, and
encourages children to engage in masturbation and promiscuous sex of all kinds
at an early age. There is no record that even
The National Council of Churches and many of the national hierarchies appear to be in full support of all of the radical leftist ideologies of today. The Institute for Religion and Democracy (IRD) article, Evangelical and Religious Left Continue Push for Liberalized Immigration and Conditional Amnesty, states:
A wide spectrum of religious groups, including Mainline Protestants, liberal evangelicals and some Catholic groups continue to push for “Comprehensive Immigration Reform” as touted by Illinois Democratic Congressman Luis Gutierrez and New York Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer. These church groups, operating through the Interfaith Immigration Coalition and elsewhere, insist that Christian justice and compassion equal increased legal immigration, even during a recession, and conditional amnesty for nearly all illegal immigrants. Some church groups even advocate open borders and no immigration restrictions.
An IRD article, Liberal
Churches Pray Against
IRD President Mark Tooley commented:
“The Religious Left seems to attack all immigration law enforcement as ‘racist and anti-immigrant.’ Is there any immigration law enforcement they can affirm?
“While many advocates of liberalized immigration policies pay some lip service to border security and law enforcement, much of this Religious Left coalition is discomfited by either. They instead dream of a
United Stateswithout borders, welcoming whoever wants to enter, automatically offering tax-funded social services to everyone, as reparation for America’s ostensible greed, racism and imperialism.
“The utopian Religious Left does not accept that anybody can be ‘illegal,’ because of their view that anyone from anywhere should be able to move into the
U.S. at any time.
“While the Isaiah prayer and fast coalition disapproves of regulated borders (at least for the United States), nations are morally responsible for controlling immigration precisely because both potential immigrants and citizens have enormous moral importance and merit protection from avoidable upheaval and disruption.”
It appears that what
these "religious" people really want is the destruction of
An IRD article, Religious
Left Calls Ground Zero Mosque Opponents Bigots,
by the National Council of Churches (NCC), the Religious Left is backing the
proposed Ground Zero Islamic center while denouncing the mosque’s skeptics as
“hateful.” In the article, Mark Tooley, President of IRD says:
This pro-mosque Religious Left coalition is more distressed over Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin than ascendant radical Islam.
It is true that under our Constitution, the Muslims have a right to build their mosque. However, there can be valid regulations as to where churches or mosques can be built, and there are matters concerning the propriety of building a mosque near ground zero. It certainly appears that there are certain Muslims that merely want to build a large monument to gloat over the destruction at the World Trade Center wrought by certain Muslims. Islam is the religion of these Muslims. In no Islamic Country would Christians be allowed to build a church, anywhere, or even to openly worship. Many who have tried have been brutally murdered.
From my studies,
there is no real evidence of any significant man-made global warming.
Yet, following the lead of the leftists, many church leaders swallow the
propaganda wholeheartedly. No one must question that which is politically correct. To
do so is to go against God, according to some of them. The following is a quote
from the article, Global-Warming Skeptics
Face Divine Judgment, Suggests NAE’s Cizik:
“And frankly, I would wish that the White House and even the President of the
United States [This was 2006, when George W. Bush was President.]would get that picture, that he would be held accountable.” Cizik added an ominous warning, borrowing words from the letter to the Hebrews ( ) about the damnation of those who forsake the faith: “It’s a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” [Rev. Richard Cizik, is Vice President for Governmental Affairs of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE).]
The IRD article (
During closing remarks before the House of Representatives approved passage of health care legislation, Speaker Nancy Pelosi thanked religious left groups for their enthusiastic support. Specifically cited among them was the
Unitedfor having lobbied Congress to “Say yes to health care reform.” MethodistChurch
"That is why we're proud and also humbled today to act with the support of millions of Americans who recognize the urgency of passing health care reform,” Pelosi declared from the House floor. “And more than 350 organizations, representing Americans of every age, every background, every part of the country, who have endorsed this legislation.”
“To the American Medical Association, the Catholic Health Association, the United Medical -- the United
Methodist Church, and Voices of's Children. From A to Z -- they are sending a clear message to Members of Congress: Say yes to health care reform.” America
Pelosi’s website lists major pro-Obamacare groups to which she thanks. The site names the National Council of Churches, the United Methodist Board of Church and Society, and Faithful Reform in Health Care, a coalition that included Mainline Protestant agencies.
“We are not finished,” explained Jim Winkler of the United Methodist lobby office. “There is more work to be done in the weeks, months and years ahead to fulfill the need for health care around the globe.” [Emphasis added]
So we see that many of our "Churches" are becoming nothing more than political pawns of the left in all of its radical un-American and socialist aspects. They have completely abandoned basic Christian teachings and the Judaeo-Christian values upon which this country was founded. As a result, they are losing a great number of their members, and very substantial support. Now a good part of their support comes from George Soros and leftist political organizations.
You will note from the references that a good part of the material for this article came from the Institute on Religion and Democracy. This organization has done a tremendous amount of work to try to get some of our mainline churches, particularly the United Methodists and Presbyterians, to return to their Christian and traditional values, and to terminate their leftist political programs. Otherwise, there is no use in their continued existence. An abundance of additional information may be obtained from the IRD website, and their Press Releases.
